HABITAT

Performance
2022 / 2023
Cuban soil, wooden suitcase.

Habitat is a work has a processual nature and started the moment before I abandoned my country of origin, Cuba. The artist carried with herself a hand bag of some homeland soil and to take it into the foreign context. This performance places the artist as a subject, who is constantly migrating. This subject is searching his ties to earth and to the word home.

This work´s objective is to consolidate our bond to our planet. It sees us as an identity-encirclind multicultural crowds. This bond its appreciated during the performance, when the original soil is split and it mixes with the new soil creating some kind of “habitable” island. This project seeks connect with the earth, from the sense of common belonging that the word “Home” gives us.

Habitat debates about migration, but above all it sees us as equals for our condition of humans beings, inhabitants of a same common space. The opposition of concepts, which from the very title can be appreciated on the action itself, tries to show how important it is to place us all at a same level. Its objective is to see earth as a common wealth and not as a private space fragmented by cultural and physical similarities. In this performance, the ties of kinship between all the individuals and the bond with all the living beings to preserve our home are essential.
Earth is becoming more fragmented, physical and imaginary walls mark our sense of belongings above all territories. These events provoke that often we DO NOT feel ourselves as the true residents of Earth, because the politic administrative divisions contain us in specific zones, out of which we are tagged as foreigners. The fragmentation, result of the economy and the power, is an aggravating factor; because of it, human liberty and the welfare of the planet are completely held by economy and politics, which are generally in conflict. It all forms a chain that takes us to deep divisions. These divisions generate break ups and inequalities; because of it, for some people to find a new territory will be such an important conquest as finding a new galaxy.
